DENVER - A Cortez man was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday for illegally possessing 59 guns.
Brian Ray Karsten, 50, pleaded guilty Sept. 2, 2008, to nine counts of gun and ammunition possession by a felon. He had a previous conviction in 2005 for felony drug possession in Utah and was barred from owning guns.
Police searched Karsten's house in Montezuma County on April 5, 2006, and found 59 firearms, including pistols, nine black powder rifles, several semiautomatic rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, according to Karsten's plea agreement and the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Several of the guns were stolen, although Karsten told police he didn't know they were stolen, according to the plea agreement.
U.S. District Judge Lewis Babcock's sentence includes three years of probation after the prison term. Karsten is in federal custody.
