Colorado’s mining heritage is kept alive – and running – by the Western Pack Burro Association, which sponsors races throughout Colorado each summer. The humans run alongside their burros, usually over mountain passes and along demanding trails. This year’s schedule begins May 25 in Georgetown and concludes Sept. 21 in Frederick. In this photo, racers move toward the starting line for the 2017 race in Victor.
An opening procession, complete with dragon, winds through Sloan’s Lake Park before the dragon boats take to the lake in 2012. The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival started in 2001 at Sloan’s Lake Park in Denver as a way to celebrate and promote the culture, contributions and accomplishments of the state’s Asian Pacific communities. This year’s festival will be July 27-28. For more information, visit www.cdbf.org.
