It is that time of year again to celebrate our community through the La Plata County Fair. The theme of the 63rd annual fair is Blue Ribbon Fun.
Now, we know not everyone will receive a blue ribbon for their projects; however, everyone is a winner for participating. Every 4-H Club member has won this year through the knowledge they have gained and through the leadership and life skills they have developed throughout the year.
I encourage our community to come to the Extension Building at the fairgrounds and see all the unique projects our youths have completed this year. It is truly amazing to see how much hard work and dedication these kids have put into their projects. For example, Florida 4-Leaf member Tyler Campbell is bringing in a 15-foot wooden boat for his woodworking project. In addition, I know through our educational project days throughout the summer that there is going to be many attractive cakes on display by 4-H members enrolled in the cake-decorating project. Try not to put your fingers in the cakes. We will also have great displays for photography, leather crafting, clothing construction, ceramics, welding, heritage arts and many more.
The fair is also a great opportunity to check out the next generation of farmers, ranchers, homesteaders and backyard farmers of our community. The bunny barn is where you can see all the rabbit and poultry projects our youngsters are involved in. There will be a variety of different and exquisite birds and bunnies on display. If youre thinking about getting chickens or bunnies for your backyard, there will be a wealth of local knowledge on hand to assist you and answer your questions.
The livestock pavilion is where to head to see all the cows, pigs, goats and sheep. Our young agrarians will be showing their animals throughout the week in the livestock ring. Please check your fair book for times of the different animal shows.
Also, I ask you to take the time to stop and talk to our 4-H members about their animal projects and encourage them to continue to learn how to make a living off the land.
4-H Community BBQ
Finally, it is my great pleasure to invite everyone to come on down to the 4-H Community BBQ.
Once again we have had tremendous support from local corporate sponsors and local small businesses to put on the best barbecue of the summer.
This is a great time to meet up with old friends, sit back and talk about the good ol days, enjoy a big tasty meal and most importantly support your local 4-H program that puts all the proceeds back into our leaders of the future.
The barbecue will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday on the Durango/La Plata Senior Center lawn next to Durango High School.
The meal will consist of local beef and pork, country beans, corn, salad, bread cobbler, ice cream and drinks. We will also have a bluegrass band playing for a few hours. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door; seniors and children are $5.
Big thanks goes out to all our superstar volunteers who make this great community event a success year after year.
