Iron Horse Bicycle Classic wants community input for 50th anniversary events

Return of the ‘Roostmaster’ or BMX? You can help decide
Now an assistant race director for the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, mountain bike legend Todd Wells is looking for rider and community feedback for suggested events and activities for the 2021 IHBC when it celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Ned Overeed, seen here winning the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic men’s road race in 1983, has been a constant at the IHBC since 1982. He’s sure to be a big part of the 50th anniversary celebration in 2021.
John Tomac was the force to be reckoned with in the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic “Roostmaster” races at Chapman Hill. For the 50th anniversary in 2021, race director Gaige Sippy would like to see that event return.
Ned Overend descends Coal Bank Pass en route to his men’s record fifth victory at the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic in 2011.
Sarah Sturm, who won the 2019 Iron Horse Bicycle Classic women’s professional road race, would like to see an enduro mountain bike race in the high country added to the IHBC schedule for the 50th anniversary event in 2021.
BMX had a glorious welcome to the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic’s downtown Sunday festivities in 2017 and 2018, and BMX fans would like to see it come back after being left off the schedule in 2019.
After 48 years, the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic has changed several times, but the mystique of the road race from Durango to Silverton remains.

Livingston’s input

Note: Sports editor John Livingston has some of his own ideas for the 50th Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, both practical and some probably impossible:

Make the professional road race go from Durango to Silverton, over Red Mountain Pass to Ouray and back to Silverton. Top pros call the 47-mile ride from Durango to Silverton “relatively short,” so for one year, at least, let’s make it a real one-day classic at 95 miles with some more climbing.Offer to double the road race payout for one year to try to lure some of the big names of pro road cycling back to the IHBC.Bring back downtown BMX straight rhythm and an exhibition event for BMX and mountain bikes on the dirt jumps. As crazy as it sounds, when the mountain bike race featured Olympian Howard Grotts winning his hometown event in 2018, all spectator eyes downtown were on the BMX riders instead of the mountain bike action.Give the gravity folks a stage with head-to-head dual slalom at Chapman Hill.An Epic Rides style fat-tire crit for the mountain bikers the Friday night of IHBC weekend in downtown Durango. Fast, furious and tons of spectator fun at dusk after the IHBC kick-off/registration party.A bracket style head-to-head sprint challenge down Main Street in Durango. Sixteen men and 16 women in a two-block sprint – an all-out drag race.Allow open containers of beer for fans on the closed portion of Main Avenue during Sunday festivities and set up beer tents.Hire Chad Cheeney as the announcer in Silverton for the road race Saturday and the festivities Sunday. In 2019, the women’s road race winner was never announced as Sarah Sturm crossed the finish line, and podium announcements were rushed and chaotic. Cheeney is the man for the mic in Durango.More live music at Buckley Park for the Durango folks who don’t love bike racing but want to be part of the big hometown party.A parade of champions and Durango’s cycling royalty to conclude the weekend of festivities that finishes with a fireworks celebration. Because who doesn’t love a parade, a chance to celebrate cycling icons and fireworks?
