New Mexico’s ‘moon trees’ planted after Apollo 14 are lost

Clouds surround the “Moon Tree,” a loblolly pine propagated from a seed that orbited the moon with Apollo 14 astronauts in 1971, and is now a stately tree growing in the Athens-Clarke County Planning Department parking lot in Athens, Ga. Five trees planted in New Mexico from seeds taken to the moon during the Apollo 14 and given to the state by NASA have all died or been forgotten, said officials at the locations where the trees were planted decades ago.
