All the fuss about newspaper vending machines on and around Main Avenue has a simple resolution. Why not limit newspaper vending machines to actual newspapers?
The cute, colorful "condo" machines are not dispensing newspapers - they're purveying advertising. Even yard sale posters are prohibited from public property, so why do we need to discuss the suitability of vending advertising from machines on the sidewalk?
We have two good newspapers here in Durango - the Herald and the Telegraph - and occasionally The Denver Post and The (Farmington) Daily Times appear in their mostly empty machines. If you include USA Today and The Wall Street Journal, we're a well-informed town and should feel lucky that these publications would go to the expense of placing vending machines where we can stay that way.
