La Plata County 4-H is a proud member of the Child Youth and Family Master Plan Implementation Team. Being on the team allows us to work with a diversity of civic organizations looking to promote positive community development in our area.
Starting with an event last weekend and continuing for the next couple of weeks, Child Youth and Family Master Plan and 4-H will be promoting Neighborhood Days in La Plata County.
According to the National Neighborhood Day website, National Neighborhood Day was established as an annual day to recognize and reinforce the relationships that are the fabric of our communities. It is a day of simple gatherings of neighbors to rekindle friendships; welcome new neighbors; catch up on each others families, interests and needs; and share food, fellowship and fun.
Each community can decide for itself how to celebrate the day. The main message is to encourage neighbors to get to know their neighbors.
La Plata County 4-H would like to have the community join us from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to celebrate Hesperus with a fun Neighborhood Day at the Old Fort Lewis campus. There will be fun activities, a tour of the Old Fort gardens and a tasty barbacue. 4-H will supply local Sunnyside meat for the grill. Participants are encouraged to bring a potluck item, including the use of a local food in a harvest fest tradition.
A special activity that is being planned for the 4-H neighborhood events is the video diary recordings of participants who will be asked to tell what difference a sense of neighborhood has meant in their lives especially if 4-H was a part of that experience. However, the whole community is welcome and encouraged to come out for this event.
In these tough economic times, we feel it is extremely important for members of our community to unite and discuss ways that our area can work together. These events provide an informal opportunity to do that. We are all concerned about the social, economic, environmental and cultural health of our area. By creating strong relationships with your neighbors, we build positive communities through sharing resources and learning to effectively communicate for the betterment of the whole.
Other neighborhood days are still being fine-tuned for the next couple of weeks. 4-H would love to help any neighborhood in hosting and supplying meat for your event. We also have a great list of fun activities that might be of interest to your community.
Please call the Extension office for upcoming areas and times for events or for more information on hosting your own.
