LPEA to continue line maintenance
La Plata Electric Association is continuing maintenance of its lines, trimming and removing trees.
Crews will be working the next two months, weather permitting, along Florida Road (County Road 240), County Road 238/239, Valle Vista Way, East Animas Road (County Road 250) and Animas View Drive (County Road 203), and west along U.S. Highway 160 south to Marvel, Kline, Redmesa to the state line.
Trees deemed hazardous are those that are dead, damaged, infested with insects, showing evidence that the root system is jeopardized or unstable, or one that may be leaning toward power lines and is tall enough to come into contact with electrical equipment if it were to fall. If homeowners see a hazardous tree on their property, they should contact LPEA.

Driver-safety program to be held Oct. 18
AARP will hold a driver safety program from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Pine Room at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
The classroom refresher course is designed for drivers age 50 and older. Car insurance discounts are available in most states through an insurance agent.

Archaeological society to meet Thursday
The San Juan Basin Archaeological Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College.
Professional engineer Patricia Flood will discuss Alhambra the Engineering and Art of Water. The Alhambra, located in Granada, Spain, is a complex of palaces, fortresses and grounds created by the Moors in the 14th century.
Presentation about back pain to be held
Mercy Regional Medical Centers Orthopedic & Spine Center of Excellence will host Your Aching Back, a free presentation by fellowship-trained spine surgeon Dr. Douglas Orndorff from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Windom Room at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.
Orndorff will explain causes of lower back and leg pain, numbness and weakness associated with changes in the lower spine. He will describe relief treatments and innovative procedures.
