Under lost and found we find: one complete set of new golf clubs, used only once, unfortunately not secured by a pull cart, last seen hurtling through the jet stream toward Elephant Butte, N.M.
This could have been true after last week's horrendous winds, which hit up and down the Western Slope. The only people able to escape this air attack were the "worm-burner" experts, of whom I can proudly lay claim. I thought windy conditions were supposed to subside when the sun went down - again no consolation to our area golfers.
So, if you were fortunate enought to have played in the dust storm that brought parts of Utah, Arizona and Eestern Colorado onto our doorstep, my hat's off to you. This will only toughen you up for the afternoon showers of June and July.
I am so glad to begin talk about tournament results as the 2009 competitive season kicked off last weekend.
I begin with the Hopin' We're Open 2-Person Scramble net event at Dalton Ranch Golf Club last Saturday. First Flight teammates Bob Barnhardt and Dean Mize came in first with a score of 62.3.
Ricki Rathjen and Gary Hunt came in second at 62.6. The Ariano team of Mario and Rocky finished third at 62.8, while the team of Greg Caton and John Hansen rolled in fourth at 64.4. Jeff Knuckles and Roger Hayes tied Tom Dunne and Ron Holligan for fifth with scores of 65.3.
Second Flight top honors went to Chuck Pierce and Ron Keller with a score of 58.6, while Brian and Nancy West finished second at 62.6.
Joe Leder and Steve Eccher teamed to take third place at 62.8. Dru English and Randy Egner teamed to finish fourth at 63.6. John Wilkin and Russ Smith rounded out the place winners in fifth at 63.9.
The 2009 AXXIS Audio 1-2-3 Four Person Best Ball rolled out a solid field of players as the team of Justin Lyons, Bobby Verquer, Jerry Vandiver and Fred Atencio took first place with a score of 123.
A close second at 124 were Chris Engle, Phil Gunn, Larry Gaughan and Steve Biery. Bob Barnhardt, Tom Newman, Chuck Carman and Ron Keller captured third at 126, while Greg Walsh, Ted Hoeger, Jerry Thomas and Leroy Lucero came in fourth at 127.
Ben Curtis, Drew Bates, Ron Mass and Greg Bush tied Doug Manske, Reid Francis, Eli Miranda and Richard Koch for fifth at 129. Luke Tanner, Ken Wolke, Laurie Simmons and Louie Esquibel tied John Hall, Ken Van Zee, Vince Mirabel and Don Esquibel for seventh at 130.
Dalton Ranch Golf Club will host the first monthly Couples Tournament on Sunday. The field is limited to the first 48 players, or 24 couples. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
If you love Calloway equipment, then you will be in straight-and-narrow heaven Friday and Saturday as the manufacturer will conduct Demo Days at Hillcrest Golf Club. Activities will run from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The ladies will hit the tee box for the annual Hillcrest Women's Golf Association Opening Night dinner Monday. Drinks and registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a dinner to be held at 6:30.
The cost is $8, and you must RSVP by Friday at 247-1499. The first HWGA Ladies Day event is Tuesday.
