Aerospace Design Team participates in forum
Adviser Dan Garner and Durango Aerospace Design Team members Katie Dudley, Sean McLaughlin, Colin Mummery and Katy Schneider participated in an education-reform forum Oct. 11 co-sponsored by the Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado Legacy Foundation.
The team presented a 25-minute overview of what happens in the classroom, the type of learning that happens and how it pushes students into the professional world.
Schneider, a senior, was invited to be a part of a panel to answer questions from the audience about the state of education in Colorado. After the forum, the team traveled to Boulder and received a tour of the Ball Aerospace Labs.

Bayfiled Elementary School receives $10,000 grant
Bayfield Elementary School applied for a grant from the Colorado Department of Education and was awarded $10,000 to help implement the schools improvement plan.
BP Amoco and La Plata Electric Association have granted additional funding for the project.
The resources received will be used to support staff in accelerating the reading growth of students who are below grade level through professional development in reading content and assessment and implementing a systematic professional learning community process.
To reach these goals, the funding is being used for training in a program called Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling, which provides professional development on the foundations of scientifically based reading, spelling, writing and language instruction. The school also has been awarded support in the form of a CDE technical assistance coordinator.
