The Fort Lewis College womens soccer team closed out the regular season Sunday with a classic match against a classic rival.
A single goal, scored in the 71st minute, decided the outcome of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match in Denver: Regis 1, Fort Lewis 0.
I thought we played excellent soccer. We just couldnt get the ball in the back of the net, Fort Lewis College head coach Damian Clarke said.
We outshot them, and I thought the game reflected that, said Clarke, who added that the Skyhawks played excellent possession soccer against Regis.
They scored on a good counterattack ... classic soccer, Clarke said.
Jordan Miller of Regis scored the one-touch goal after taking a pass from teammate Taylor White.
The shot was one of seven for the Rangers; the Skyhawks had 11 shots.
Really, our back four were absolutely fantastic, Clarke said, adding that the FLC defense shut down the potent Regis attack for much of the match.
And it was as well as weve moved the ball all year, Clarke said.
After an energetic first half, we labored a little more in the second half, Clarke said. But the team played well. I cant complain, he said after the Skyhawks, ranked No. 8, finished the regular season 13-3-3 overall, 10-2-2 in the RMAC.
Regis moved to 14-4-0 overall, 11-3-0 in the RMAC.
The loss forces the Fort Lewis womens team into the quarterfinals of the annual RMAC Womens Soccer Tournament and a home match Wednesday against New Mexico Highlands.
That will be a battle ... against a hungry New Mexico Highlands team, Clarke said.
Game time for Wednesdays RMAC quarterfinal at Dirks Field will be announced this week.
Its going to be a crazy game, Clarke said of the matchup against Highlands, 10-7-1 overall, 8-5-1 in conference.
Clarke said the final regular-season loss and watching the conference title slip away over the last two weeks was frustrating for the Skyhawks.
For the seniors to have it in their hands and to not get it (title) was disappointing, Clarke said. Hopefully, its another learning experience from them.
