In last years NCAA Tournament, the shootout gods smiled on the Fort Lewis College womens soccer team.
Not so much in this years Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.
Colorado School of Mines got the best of the Skyhawks for the second time this season, outshooting FLC 3-1 in penalty kicks to advance to the RMAC Tournament finals against Colorado Mesa after playing to a 1-1 draw after double overtime Friday in Denver.
FLC goalkeeper Amanda Raso snuffed a shot from Anna Evans in the shootouts first round, and Kendra Bulawa missed for Mines in Round 4 to keep the Skyhawks alive, but Megan Striedel, Jane Barden and Nicole Schumacher couldnt match Sara Egboms successful penalty kick for FLC.
Megan Woodworth and Danielle Herring were successful for the Orediggers, and CSM keeper Penny Rogers made two saves on the three Fort Lewis misses.
Oddly enough, all but one of the nine shooters shot for the right side of the net in the shootout.
At least if we play again, well know which way theyre going, FLC head coach Damian Clarke said.
Clarke was quick to take the blame for the lack of success in the shootout, saying Fort Lewis didnt practice penalty kicks throughout the week.
To be honest with you, Ill take this one. We hadnt practiced penalty kicks, the Skyhawks head coach said.
Clarke said Mines dominated the opening half, while the Skyhawks rebounded to get the better of play in the second before two evenly matched overtimes. Neal scored in the first half for the Orediggers (14-2-3), with Egbom answering in the 81st minute off a rebound.
In the second half, honestly, we took it out of them. ... It looked like wed find a way to get a win, but we didnt break them down for a second goal, Clarke said.
With losses Friday by Regis and Fort Lewis (14-2-4), the Orediggers, who entered the weekend second in the Central Region, look to be in the drivers seat to host the Central Region Tournament portion of the NCAA Tournament, which begins next weekend.
Despite the fact his side likely lost the chance to host the NCAAs, Clarke joked itll just be nice for FLC to visit somewhere other than Denver.
Weve had a hard time in Denver, Clarke said with a laugh. We havent won in Denver this year. Weve tied or lost every game weve played in Denver.
