The county commissioners are being very untransparent as to their true motives in wanting to replace the board of the San Juan Basin Health Department with all of their own, and I am extremely disappointed. It seems to be one of those situations where there is actually a functional system in place for a change, as attested to by a number of employees - many of whom have worked there for many years. And yet, for undisclosed reasons, the commissioners are choosing to abuse the power of their positions and disrupt this system, which may well result in a lowering of environmental standards, making it easier for some types of development to occur.
The health department has a high standard with respect to protecting the health of the residents it is mandated to protect, and it would be a demoralizing move for all involved to see this compromised.
But, of course, until the commissioners come clean as to their true motive, all the public can do is guess. Their interference will only lead to an inevitable downward spiral in the healthy functioning of the department.
I am also shocked that this group of commissioners, two of whom I recently voted for, is not able to grasp how extremely politically incorrect this move is. I hope to see a very rapid change of heart on commissioners' part so that the health department can continue to do its job without a political agenda driving its policies.
