National park rethinks its message about theft

Petrified Forest now embraces visitors rather than treating them as suspects
For years, park managers were so worried about people stealing petrified wood from Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, they instituted regulations that officials now fear were too aggressive.
Park managers started comparing historic photographs to more recent images taken at the same spots and began to realize theft of petrified wood wasn’t as extensive as previously thought.
Hundreds of people who have stolen chunks of petrified wood have sent back the fossilized prizes, along with letters of apology.
