A South Carolina man who broke into lockers at the Durango Community Recreation Center and went on a $3,500 spending spree was sentenced Friday to six years in prison.In a plea agreement with the District Attorney's Office, Dana Edwin McCrum, 49, pleaded guilty to felony identity theft.
He had no comment before sentencing.
The thefts occurred between Dec. 11 and Jan. 13.
McCrum cut the locks off lockers and stole items from four separate lockers at the rec center. He used stolen credit cards to purchase a pair of Salomon skis, gift cards, malt scotch, a camera and other items. He also completed several fraudulent ATM withdrawals and asked for cash back at most stores.
He was arrested in January in Grand Junction after police caught him stealing items from lockers at Gold's Gym in Grand Junction and then using stolen credit cards to obtain merchandise.
The Grand Junction Police Department notified the Durango Police Department that its suspect may have been involved in the Durango thefts.
The Durango Police Department obtained a search warrant for the suspect's home in Telluride and was able to recover numerous items related to the Durango thefts.
McCrum's image was captured on several security cameras at local businesses, including the rec center.
