Health, safety council to meet in Durango
The Coordinated School Health Services Office of Durango School District 9-R will host its semiannual School Health and Safety Advisory Council meeting from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the board room at the 9-R administration building, 201 E. 12th St.
Participants will hear about student wellness programs in the schools, the School Based Health Centers, the new student safety Standard Response Protocol and more.
Participants will have the opportunity to comment on school safety, including bullying.
Florida Mesa school starts book exchange
Florida Mesa Elementary School is offering a book exchange.
Students can bring books they no longer read and donate them for others to read. Students can pick up books to keep or to bring back and exchange for other books. Books will be available on the tall white bookshelf outside Room 114 between the cafeteria and the art room.
Students can take one or two books at a time. To donate books, students can turn them in to classroom teachers or give them to Sarah Hanrahan and Linda Morris, intervention teachers.

DHS speech, debate team seeks tournament judges
The Durango High School Speech and Debate Team will host a home tournament Dec. 9 and 10.
The team is looking for judges. People who are interested in judging high school students as they debate, perform works of literature or recite original speeches should email coach Darlene Clayton at email@example.com. Clinics for the judging of interpretation and speaking events will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 30, and judging for debate events will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 1 in Room 2084 of the high school.
Native American club to host potluck today
The Durango High School Native American Club will host a potluck Thanksgiving dinner for Native American students and families in the Durango School District at 5:30 p.m. today at Escalante Middle School, 141 Baker Lane.
Turkey and drinks will be provided. High school students are asked to bring other main dishes; middle-schoolers, side dishes; and elementary-schoolers, desserts.
DHS senior pictures are due by Dec. 2
Durango High School senior pictures are due by Dec. 2 to Tammy Schreiner in Room W2113.
All students will need to check in with Schreiner by that date, even if photographers indicated they were sending pictures directly to the school.
Winter sports meeting will be held today
A mandatory meeting for all winter athletes, parents and coaches will take place at 7 p.m. today in the main gym.
The general session will begin at 7 p.m. and specific sports sessions will begin at 7:30 p.m. in these locations:
Boys basketball, Gym 1.
Girls basketball, Gym 2.
Wrestling, Wrestling Room.
Girls swimming, cafeteria.
Students who attended the fall sports meeting do not have to attend the general session, but must attend the specific sport session.
Needham orchestra to perform Thursday
The Needham Elementary School Orchestra will perform at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Needham multi-purpose room.

Riverview to hold Thanksgiving dinner
Riverview Elementary School invites Riverview families and friends to its Thanksgiving Dinner Celebration on Thursday at the school.
Each grade will eat dinner at a separate time.

Riverview Elementary Schools fifth-grade students will perform the African folk tale Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky, arranged and retold by Randy DeLelles and Jeff Kriske, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Riverview gymnasium.

The Special Education Advisory Committee is seeking members who are interested in learning more about advocating for students with special needs in the school system.

Students of Lori Fishers 10th-grade humanities class are participating in the Library of Congress Veterans History Project. These videos will be exhibited online on Fishers YouTube channel, which will be linked from her digital portfolio at http://lorifisher.blogspot.com/p/projects.html. Videos will be online by Dec. 15. Eventually, all videos and interviews will be archived on the Library of Congress website and will be available to students, researchers and the public.
