Durangos plastics recycling controversy could be wrapped up by early January.
The city of Durango stopped collecting plastics from drop-off sites in September after some city workers got sick from contaminants.
That raised the furor of residents outside the city who dont have the benefit of curbside pickup. City councilors say they are still getting calls about it.
The plan is to implement a monitoring system to protect staff members and allow for the resumption of drop-offs at the city recycling center at 7710 Tech Center Drive, said Roy Petersen, director of city operations, during a study session Tuesday.
The goal is to have the monitoring system in place by early 2012.
City Manager Ron LeBlanc explained why the city stopped the collection at drop-off sites but continued the curbside pickup for city residents.
Its the unmonitored drop-offs where there is the most risk, he said.
In the city, we know where you live, he said.
