Santa Claus is coming to town, and everyone is invited to the Durango Mall to get their picture taken with him.
Santa and his helpers will be available for pictures the upcoming three weekends of December and the full week leading up to Christmas. You have the choice of either having your picture mounted on a Christmas card or having the picture inside a snow globe. Santa is more than willing to have individuals, families and friends get their photo taken. This is a wonderful opportunity to get that unique holiday gift, get in the holiday spirit and support a great organization.
Santa at the Mall is a fundraising event for the La Plata County 4-H organization. All proceeds will go back into providing support for educational and leadership opportunities for our members and volunteers. These opportunities are essential in providing our youths and adults with the knowledge and skills to be better community citizens. All our clubs throughout the county are participating in this event as a community service activity. Community service is an integral part of the 4-H experience and provides our youths with the important life lesson of giving back.
Throughout the year, our clubs do many different community service activities. They are active all over La Plata County helping clean up roadsides and cemeteries, visiting the elderly in their homes, organizing food drives and assisting others in need. These activities instill our youths with strong values that we hope benefit our entire community.
Furthermore, it has been great to witness our clubs working together on this fundraiser. It is wonderful to see our youths practice their teamwork, public speaking, marketing, money management and overall positive attitude in the community. These real-life opportunities will continue to strengthen their life skills development.
In the coming year, we will be looking to enhance the opportunities for our 4-H members to gain better skills in real-life public speaking. From opportunities at announcing at the county fair, at club meetings and for local business sponsors, we will be assisting our youths in developing their confidence and spreading their voice in the community. Please contact the Extension office for more information on becoming a 4-H Youth Ambassador.
Lastly, we would like to invite everyone to attend Home for the Holidays brought to you by our good friends at Durango High Schools FFA and Student Council. This fundraiser is a dinner and silent auction benefiting Bruce Anderson. Anderson has been a great supporter of the agriculture community in our region and this is a wonderful opportunity to help Anderson and his family out this holiday season.
Home for the Holidays will take place on Dec. 14 at the DHS cafeteria, with dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. and a silent auction from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased from all FFA and Student Council members. We look to see you all there.
