Regarding the controversy over the “Chief” sign at Toh-Atin Gallery, why not have one of the Native American artists represented by the gallery repaint its face with a portrait of a real Native American chief?
This certainly would get rid of the caricature aspect of the piece.
There may need to be a little more work on the sign to make it look real.
I’m sure the Clarks never regarded the piece as a racial statement. They promote and sell Native American art and I think they could indicate this with a proper repainting of the piece.
