I have a few questions about the controversy surrounding the “Chief” sign.
What’s your prejudice or bigotry that you can’t see a happy Native American?
What is racist about a Native American smiling and waving?
Must Native American portrayals be solemn, stoic and appear miserable? Can we not recognize humor and joy in Native American culture?
Are longtime locals allowed to have a feeling of warmth and familiarity for a local monument that has stood for their lifetimes?
Do we need to make all small towns as generic as possible so as not to possibly offend anyone?
What do you see when you look at the “Chief”? Does it show an underlying prejudice or intolerance? Of whom are you intolerant and why?
I think the removal of the “Chief” would be a sad, shallow action.
