There will be no Day 2 for Durango at the Class 5A State Swimming Championships.
"We just left everything at Districts last weekend," Durango High School boys swim coach Tom Coxwell said Friday in Fort Collins. "We were one second, two seconds too slow in everything.
"I don't know what went wrong - coaching, the long drive up here, the intimidation factor from all of these Front Range swimmers.
"We just swam flat," Coxwell said.
Teale Kitson missed qualifying for today's finals by one spot. He finished 17th in the 100 backstroke but swam slower than his District time from last weekend.
The top 16 competitors qualify for the finals.
Kitson finished 19th in the 200 freestyle.
Robert Stafford, a senior co-captain, finished 19th in the 200 individual medley and 25th in the 100 backstroke.
"The kids were ready," Coxwell said. "They were prepared, they were not tight but loose, but we just didn't get anything done.
"Nobody was sick. We just don't have any excuses. When the boys got out of the water, they just shook their head and said, 'What happened?'"
Taylor Sallee finished 30th in the 200 IM and 40th in the 500 freestyle.
Durango's 200 freestyle relay team of Kitson, Sallee, Stafford and fellow senior captain Alex Schweitz, which broke a decade-old school record last weekend, finished 30th.
The same foursome finished 25th of 45 teams in the medley relay.
"When I reflect back on the season, it certainly culminated last weekend at Districts with eight new state qualifiers and three school records," Coxwell said. "And that's where we should peak; that's our competition, our level at Districts.
"I'm extremely proud of them."
Coxwell will give way to assistant coach Jordan Parker next season.
"The pot is not empty," he said.
Schweitz, Stafford and Marc Morris are the only seniors of this year's state qualifiers. Kitson, Sallee and Kalen Dear will be seniors, and Kyle Odin, the seventh Demon to reach the state championships this season, will be a junior.
"For such a good season and a dynamic team, it's just a bit odd," Coxwell said of the Demons' state performance. "We're not really frustrated, just mystified."
