Ignacio High School wrestling coach Bob Overturf took six wrestlers to the Class 2A regional tournament at Sargent High School in Monte Vista.
Five are going to state next weekend in Denver. Two won regional championships.
Quite the showing for IHS.
Three-time state champion Alex Peña rolled through the 126-pound bracket before edging Fowlers Zach DuVall 6-3 in the regional final, and Colton Wyatt won the 195-pound regional title by pinfall over Ty Van Oort of Rye to lead the way for Ignacio.
Oh yeah, it was a pretty good regional tournament, Overturf said.
Teagan Overturf clinched a spot at 152 pounds by finishing third in a bracket that contained three of the states top five wrestlers at that weight class according to coloradopreps.com. Overturf, the coachs son, is ranked No. 3 by the website.
Blaine Mickey picked up a fourth-place finish at 170 pounds to earn his trip to Denver, and Jeff Herrera finished fifth and won a wrestleback to qualify at 132 pounds.
Jeff Herrera, his weight (class) was pretty tough, Overturf said. And Alex ... he walked right through it.
Bob Overturf said hes hoping Ignacio, ranked No. 8 in Class 2A by The Denver Post, can muster a finish of 10th place or better as a team with five wrestlers at the state tournament. He was quick to point out, however, that No. 1 Paonia qualified all 14 wrestlers, and No. 9 Dove Creek will bring nine to Denver next weekend.
That said, the Bobcats coach was undaunted.
Hopefully we have the bigger guns, Overturf said. When we go to the battlefield, theyll have numbers, but well have the big artillery.
