The Bayfield High School basketball teams split a girls-boys doubleheader against Centauri on Saturday night in Bayfield.
The BHS girls opened Intermountain League play with a victory over Centauri. Details of the game were not available Saturday night.
With the win, the BHS girls improved to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the IML.
The BHS boys nearly matched the feat, but Centauri rallied late to nip the BHS boys 41-39.
"It was a tough loss, for sure," BHS boys coach Chad Nachtrieb said. "We had the lead for almost the whole game."
But the Falcons, led by Colby Joe Hunt, stormed back in the final minutes. Centauri tied the game 39-39 with 13 seconds to play.
Hunt hit a basket with 1.3 seconds to play to lift the Falcons into a two-point lead.
A late shot from the Wolverines fell short.
"That was probably our best overall game of the year," Nachtrieb said. "We just had turnovers at the wrong time. That killed us."
He said the Wolverines also missed some easy shots early in the game.
"I bet we missed six layups in the first quarter," Nachtrieb said.
Dakota Decker led Bayfield with 14 points. Jesse McCoy and Jared Qualls added eight points each.
Hunt led all scorers with 16 points.
"He's a good player," Nachtrieb said. "He's tough, and he's athletic."
The BHS boys fell to 3-7 overall, 0-1 in the IML.
The Bayfield teams return to nonconference play Tuesday when they host Ignacio.
