Durango School District 9-Rs winter break will be next week, and thats a significant change to the school calendar. The weeklong winter break is the result of the reallocation of days during the school year.
In an effort to be proactive, the district has formed a unique committee to respond to the needs it anticipates this change will create. This committee is called The Community Coalition for Kids. La Plata County 4-H is excited to take part in this collaborative effort for our community.
The Community Coalition for Kids partner agencies will provide quality activities and programs throughout the week. These activities and programs are aimed to engage students in a fun, rich and safe learning environment.
In addition, the activities provide families with a low-fee opportunity while parents continue their normal work week.
These activities have been designed to target K-2 students and third- through sixth-graders. The cost will be $20 per day or $80 per week; there is also a limited amount of financial assistance available for scholarships.
Activities will include swimming, music, arts and crafts, cultural enrichment, gymnastics and ice skating, to name a few. La Plata County 4-H program activities will highlight a few of the many projects 4-H offers. We will be hosting an introduction to rabbits, where kids can learn about a variety of different rabbits and how to best care for them.
Next, we will offer a look at heritage arts, with a beginning beadwork class that allows youths to be creative and learn a new skill.
Finally, we will provide a class in cake decoration, which is one of 4-Hs most popular general projects and can be quite tasty. All activities will also allow for a life-skills component to shape your childs leadership potential.
The week program will run from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Each day will begin at the Durango Community Recreation Center.
A big thanks goes out to John Robinette at partner agency Durango Parks and Recreation Department for helping set up the schedule and registration.
For more information and to enroll, contact Robinette at robinetteJA@ci.durango.co.us or 375-7323. A detailed schedule of the weekly activities is available at the recreation center or online at www.durangogov.org/reccenter/childcare.cfm.

Also a big thanks goes out to Victor Figueroa with 9-R with coordinating this collaboration that hopefully will continue in the future.
Finally, I would also like to mention that at 6 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Fairgrounds, La Plata County 4-H will host a new family orientation for first- and second-year families and others interested in joining 4-H. We will cover what to expect in your first year and what is expected of you.
Please join us for some food, prizes and introduction to 4-H.
