The Ignacio High School wrestling team crowned five individual champions en route to the team title at the Shiprock Invitational on Saturday.
The Bobcats totaled 230.5 points to edge second-place Kirtland Central (227.5). Bloomfield was third (205).
"The boys wrestled tough coming off the Bayfield match," Ignacio head coach Bob Overturf said. "We had a good practice Friday, and the guys wrestled well (Saturday)."
Chance Wyatt, voted the outstanding wrestler of the tournament, won the 215-pound bracket for Ignacio with a pin in the finals.
Colton Wyatt of the Bobcats won at 160 pounds. He had a major decision in the championship match.
Will Appenzeller won his 135-pound weight class.
C. Torres won a title at 119 pounds for the Bobcats. He also had a pin in the final.
Alex Peña won first place in the 112-pound bracket.
Ignacio had second-place finishes from Casey Haga at 125 and Abel Velasquez at 189.
Josh Plehinger (130) and Raudel Lucero (140) added third-place finishes for the Bobcats.
Bayfield High SchoolThe Bayfield wrestlers finished fifth out of 15 teams at the prestigious Florence Invitational on Saturday.
The Wolverines had two individual champions in Austin Thorne at 145 and Markus Eckstein at 189.
Trevor Huntsman was second at 125 pounds. Teammate Taylor Swanemyr was second at 140.
Aaron Velasquez collected a fourth-place finish at 152 pounds in the tournament that featured state powers Centauri, Florence, Cañon City and Monte Vista, which finished 1-4, respectively.
Centauri is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 3A.
"It was definitely one of the toughest tournaments we've been in all year," Bayfield head coach Herb Stinson said.
"This is more indicative of what the state tournament will be like."
