Need an idea for a late-winter day outing? Take a beautiful drive to neighboring Dolores to visit the Anasazi Heritage Center on Colorado Highway 184.
Upon arriving, my friend and I stretched our legs on a paved trail up to an excavated ruin. Views at the top were heavenly.
Admission to the center is free through February. After that, cost is nominal.
Be sure to avail yourself of many hands-on exhibits (want to grind corn using a mano and metate or view artifacts through a microscope?). An added plus is a special exhibit on the Hohokam culture of southern Arizona.
The center also offers free Sunday afternoon lectures starting in April (with free admission all day on lecture days).
After visiting the center, we ventured into downtown Dolores for lunch and then wandered through an antique mall before driving back to Durango. Our wanderlust temporarily sated, we arrived back home tired but happy. Another great day in beautiful Southwest Colorado.
