Bayfield’s Battle of Antietam

BHS turns 23,000 turnovers into a regional title shot
Candace Shaw hit just three of her 14 shots from the floor Friday night but still scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as she and the Bayfield Wolverines won a 54-44 home-court victory over the Gunnison Cowboys in the first round of the CHSAA Class 3A Girls Basketball State Championships.
Bayfield senior Kayla Strobel fouled out with more than 6 minutes to go against Alyssa Nelson and the Gunnison Cowboys on Friday night. Strobel scored 10 points, while Nelson scored a game-high 18, but the Wolverines’ bench filled in for the final minutes of the game to hold off a last-ditch Cowboy surge.
In fifth grade, Haley Goddard and her fellow Bayfield seniors set a goal to make it to the state tournament at Colorado State University. If they can beat Peak to Peak today, the Wolverines will be one step closer to that goal.
