A car crash that caused a chain reaction snarled rush-hour traffic Tuesday on Main Avenue.
The crash was reported at 4:33 p.m. in the northbound lane of Main Avenue at 27th Street, in front of the Durango Community Recreation Center.
A man who was driving a Hyundai Santa Fe northbound through the intersection looked over his right shoulder and failed to see traffic in front of him, said officer Rob Haukeness with the Durango Police Department.
The driver slammed into the back of a Subaru, which lurched forward and hit a Toyota. The Toyota rear-ended a blue Saturn, he said.
The stopped cars were waiting for the trolley, he said. Police declined to immediately identify people in the crash.
The driver of the Hyundai was cited with careless driving causing injury, Haukeness said.
He did not know what distracted the man. There were no skid marks before the impact.
A woman who was in the Subaru was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center. The extent of her injuries was unknown.
Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane while crews cleared the accident scene, which backed up traffic for more than an hour.
