As a recent graduate of Durango High School and someone who was on the selection committee for our athletic director, it comes as a shock to hear that Sheldon Keresey is going to be terminated from the position. Keresey was not only an exceptional athletic director, but an all-around good person. From the perspective of a student athlete, no one supported every sport better, and it was always reassuring to see him on the sidelines during every game, meet or race (especially at swim meets, which seldom received as much attention as other sports).
Keresey clearly had the students' best interests at heart, and though not all his decisions were popular, he will be sorely missed. The elimination of the athletic director position may be a necessary evil of the 9-R budget system, but with Sheldon Keresey gone, the high school will have lost one of its strongest assets and greatest advocates.
