For the second consecutive year, the annual Pine River Invitational track and field meet will be a weekday event instead of a weekend showcase.
The popular regional track and field meet was postponed Saturday because of adverse weather.
Bayfield High School officials rescheduled the Pine River Invitation to Wednesday at Wolverine Country Stadium.
Field events will start at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with 16 schools scheduled to participate.
At least there were 16 schools scheduled to participate.
With the move from Saturday to Wednesday, more schools may join the fray like they did last year.
With an accelerated weekday schedule, all events Wednesday will be final; there will be no preliminaries.
When the meet takes off, Bayfield head coach Sherri Kimball said the throwers will draw a lot of attention.
The throwers have been doing well this year ... really well, Kimball said.
Bayfield has a pair of athletes in the shot put who are ranked among the top in Colorado in Class 3A.
Michael Hawkins, who finished eighth in the state championships last year, currently is ranked No. 7 with a throw of 45 feet, 7.75 inches.
Teammate TJ Pazell, who qualified for state in the triple jump last year, is No. 3 in the shot put with a long throw of 44-2.5.
And Candace and Samantha have been throwing well, Kimball said of Candace Shaw and Samantha Espinoza.
Shaw is ranked No. 9 in the Class 3A girls discus with a throw of 107-11. She finished seventh in the state meet a year ago.
Espinoza and Shaw both will throw the shot Wednesday as well as the discus.
A number of other top-ranking tracksters are scheduled to compete Wednesday in Bayfield, including three-time state cross country champion Ty Williams of Norwood.
Williams already has the top Class 2A time in the 3,200-meter run (9:44) and the 1,600 (4:28).
Rachel Hampton of Class 2A Telluride is the top 2A runner at 3,200 meters for the girls. Shes posted a top time of 11:44. Shes also ranked fifth in the state in the 2A 1,600.
Another Telluride runner, Josephine Bush, is the top-ranked 400-meter runner in Class 2A (59.49).
Destinee McGehee has been jumping well, too, Kimball said of the Bayfield high jumper.
Shes at 5-0 and ready to go higher, the Bayfield coach said.
And our sprint relays are doing well, Kimball said.
Other top sprinters expected Wednesday include Lexi Atkinson of the Dolores girls track team and Adam Herrera of the Ignacio boys track team.
Herrera is ranked No. 4 in Class 2A in the 400 meters with his time of 51.91.
