Time is right for collegiate cyclists

Fort Lewis College will host the annual Squawker Road Classic bicycle races Saturday and Sunday, and traffic in Durango will be impacted.
Plus, some roads will be closed.
Action will start at 8 a.m. Saturday with the team time trial on La Posta Road (County Road 213).
The collegiate cyclists as well as USA Cycling citizen racers will pedal the 13-mile time trial down La Posta Road with a finish near U.S. Highway 550.
There will be short delays on La Posta Road during the time trial. The road, however, will remain open during the event.
Racing will move to the downtown residential area of Durango for Saturday’s criterium. The course will use Fourth, Fifth and Sixth avenues as well as Eighth, Ninth and 10th streets.
The affected streets will be closed to all traffic during the criterium races that will start at 11 a.m. Racing, which will include USA Cycling divisions, will conclude by 6 p.m.
On Saturday, the Collegiate Women’s A division will race at 1:30 p.m, and the Collegiate Men’s A division will follow at 2:20 p.m.
On Sunday, the road race will affect roads near the FLC campus.
Several sections of roads will be closed to vehicles from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Westbound Goeglein Gulch between the Fort Lewis Drive roundabout and Eighth Avenue will be closed.
Plus, Eighth Avenue between College Drive and the Rim Drive traffic signal will be closed.
And westbound Rim Drive from North College to Hillcrest Golf Club will be closed during the road race, which will feature the spectator-popular climb up Eight Street, up the front hill, to FLC.
FLC cycling officials said that to exit the college mesa, drivers should use North College. To access the college, drivers should use College Drive/Geoglein Gulch.
Hillcrest golfers and Fort Lewis students, faculty and staff are advised to use Fort Lewis Drive for access.
