NFL might scrap its All-Star showcase altogether
NEW YORK Have NFL fans seen the last of the Pro Bowl?
The game could be suspended next year, two people familiar with discussions said Thursday.
Commissioner Roger Goodell, among others, expressed concerns about the quality of play after Januarys game, and the league has been holding talks with the players union about the future of the all-star game. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were not being publicized.
Responding to an ESPN report that Goodell is strongly considering suspending the game in 2013, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said: No determination has been made yet.
BCS takes a big step toward a college football playoff
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. College football is on the verge of finally having a playoff, its own version of the final four.
For the first time, all the power brokers who run the highest level of the sport are comfortable with the idea of deciding a championship the way its done in just about every other sport.
They want to limit it to four teams. Thats for sure. Now they just have to figure out how to pick the teams, where and when to play the games and what to do with the bowls. The new format would go into effect after for the 2014 season.
As for the current Bowl Championship Series, its on life support.
Now its up to each conference to determine which option it likes best. The commissioners will get back together in June and try to come up with a final version, and eventually the university presidents will have to sign off on it. That probably would come in July.
CSU endures more turnover among the coaching ranks
FORT COLLINS Colorado State head coach Kristen Holt resigned after four seasons in charge of the womens program.
Assistant coach Dick Lien will fill in on an interim basis while athletic director Jack Graham and the school conduct a search for Holts replacement.
This will be the third new coach Graham has had to hire since taking over December 2011 at Colorado State. He hired football coach Jim McElwain in December and just recently brought in Larry Eustachy to take over in mens basketball after Tim Miles left for Nebraska.
Holt was 50-71 (25-37 Mountain West) at CSU.
Rapids sign Brazilian forward and soccer veteran Edu
COMMERCE CITY The Colorado Rapids signed forward Edu from Brazils Vitoria.
A veteran of Brazils 2000 Olympic team, the 33-year-old is most known for a nine-year stretch in Spain with Celta Vigo and Real Betis. Luis Eduardo Schmidt made his pro debut with Brazils Sao Paulo in 1997.
Scarponi will wear Contadors tainted pink Giro dItalia kit
ROME Giro dItalia organizers are planning to present Michele Scarponi with the pink jersey as last years champion after Alberto Contador was stripped of the honor for doping.
Giro general director Michele Acquarone told The Associated Press that the presentation will be held next Thursday in Denmark, two days before this years race kicks off with three stages in the Scandinavian country.
In February, Contador received a two-year ban that was backdated, annulling his 2011 Giro win, among other races.
Frenchman wins Stage 3; Wiggins retains overall lead
MOUTIER, Switzerland Jonathan Hivert of France was strongest on an uphill finish in Thursdays third stage of the Tour de Romandie, and Bradley Wiggins of Britain Wednesdays stage winner retained the overall lead in the seven-stage race.
