’Cats beat the clock

On time for a fourth and a fifth, and on time for Abel Velasquez
Dusty Mangus of Ignacio set his sites on a new career high, then reached it Saturday by clearing 13 feet to win the pole vault at the Abel Velasquez Invitational at Wolverine Country Stadium. Mangus also finished third in the 100 meters, fourth in the 200 meters and fifth in the long jump.
Cloe Seibel of Ignacio chased down Kristin Knuckles of Dove Creek to finish third in the girls 800 meters Saturday at the Bobcats’ home meet in Bayfield. Danielle Miller of BHS finished fifth.
Michelle Simmons of Ignacio won the 100 meters and finished second in the high jump Saturday at the Abel Velasquez Invitational. But she was bummed when an entry snafu prevented her from running the 200 meters. “(The 100 win) made my day better ... a lot,” she said.
Ignacio freshman Sky Cotton ran a career-best 28.85 to finish second in the 200 meters. She also finished fifth in the long jump at the Bobcats’ home meet Saturday in Bayfield.
Bayfield freshman Aubry Brown and the boys 800-meter runners tried to catch their breath after their race Saturday at Wolverine Country Stadium. Brown finished seventh in the race won by Colton Polezynski of Pagosa Springs.
