Closing: A dangerous balancing act

Seven closers have ended up on the DL, most since 2008
Drew Storen’s balancing act tipped to the wrong side of the scale. The Washington Nationals’ closer had a bone chip removed from his elbow, and that landed him on the disabled list, one of eight closers so far this season to be shelved by injury.
Brian Wilson? Tommy John surgery.
Joakim Soria? Tommy John surgery.
“Trevor Hoffman showed me how to take care of my arm,” Miami Marlins’ closer Heath Bell said. “His philosophy was that you only have so many bullets in your arm, so why try to rear back and chuck it? If you don’t need to, don’t.”
Setup man Fernando Rodney is closing for the Rays’ Kyle Farnsworth (DL: elbow).
Setup man Santiago Casilla is trying his hand at closing these days because the Giants’ primary closer, Brian Wilson, is on the disabled list with a blown elbow.
Setup man Sean Marshall is closing for the Reds’ Ryan Madson (DL: elbow).
