Durango skiers compete at freestyle nationals
Jamie Wanzek placed second in the halfpipe to lead Durango-area skiers at the USASA Freestyle National Finals last month at Copper Mountain.
Representing Durango Freestyles Park & Pipe Ski Team and competing in the 16-18-year-old Women Skier division, Wanzek also placed fifth in slopestyle.
Teammate Nolan Stowers placed ninth in the halfpipe and 33rd in slopestyle in the 13-15 Men Skier class.
Other Durango-area skiers unafiliated with the team included Hank Stowers, who was eighth in the Open Men Skier division; and Ben Hessling, who was 41st in the 16-18 Men Skier division.
After suffering an injury in practice, Ty MacGuffie competed with his arm in a sling and finished 55th in the 13-15 Men Skier class.
Mancos reservoir now open for boating
Mancos State Park has opened Jackson Gulch Reservoir for boating.
In addition to boating, Mancos offers 32 campsites, two yurts, hiking trails and fishing.
The entrance station will open for the summer season May 19. Before then, the park is on a self-serve basis for entry and camping fees. Fishing licenses may be purchased at Mancos starting May 19.
The inspection station at the boat ramp will begin summer inspection hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 19. Inspection will prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance species.
