3-year-old colt chases down Bodemeister at Churchill Downs
Kentucky Derby rookie Mario Gutierrez chased down prerace favorite Bodemeister from behind to jockey I’ll Have Another to Kentucky Derby victory Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Mike Smith and Bodemeister nearly led the Kentucky Derby from start to finish, but Mario Gutierrez spurred I’ll Have Another to a come-from-behind victory in the final furlong Saturday to win the first leg of horse racing’s triple crown.
Mario Gutierrez and I’ll Have Another overhauled a tiring Bodemeister to win by 1½ lengths. He paid $32.60, $13.80 and $9. Bodemeister was second and returned $6.20 and $5.60. Dullahan (back left) was a neck back in third and paid $7.20 to show.
“He’s an amazing horse. I kept telling everybody, from the first time I met him, I knew he was the one. I knew he was good,” Kentucky Derby rookie jockey Mario Gutierrez said.
With Mario Gutierrez aboard, I’ll Have Another stormed out of post No. 19 – the first winner from that slot in 138 runnings of the Derby – and bided his time back in midpack while Bodemeister set a blistering pace. I’ll Have Another eclipsed Bodemeister in the final furlong for victory.
