The Bayfield High School baseball team completed an undefeated Intermountain League season with a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Alamosa.
The Wolverines clinched their third consecutive IML title with their ninth and 10th consecutive victories of the season.
Junior Clay Miller struck out 16 Alamosa hitters in the first game and allowed only one earned run in seven innings.
Clay was phenomenal, Bayfield head coach Tom Horton said.
The Wolverines broke open a close game in the seventh inning of the opener. With the scored tied 2-2, senior Colt Walker hit the first home run of his career to put the Wolverines ahead.
Teammate Trey Lange followed with a two-run homer, and Bayfield won the opener 5-2.
The Wolverines pounded out 19 hits in six innings of the second game, winning 16-5.
Derek MacGuffie blasted a three-run homer for Bayfield. Walker had three hits. Miller had two hits. Freshman Matthew Knickerbocker had three hits and drove in four runs. Lange had three hits. And Austin McMenimen also had three hits for Bayfield.
Walker pitched for the Wolverines. He gave up six hits and three earned runs.
Clays our bulldog pitcher, Horton said. He goes out there and battles.
This was a gutsy, tenacious effort by the guys, Horton said.
BHS (13-6, 8-0 IML) is 22-2 in conference games over the last three seasons.
The Wolverines now await their assignment for the Class 3A playoffs. Seedings will be determined Wednesday morning.
