The brackets out, and as expected, the Durango High School girls soccer team will open at a familiar locale.
The Demons, champions of the Southwestern League, earned the No. 14 seed and will host No. 19 Wheat Ridge at Riverview Sports Complex when the CHSAA Class 4A Girls Soccer Championships begin Tuesday.
Durango head coach Aaron Eldridge said the game time hasnt been set but that it likely will be Durangos usual 5 p.m. start time.
Its the first hosting assignment for the Demons in two years. In 2010, DHS fell 1-0 in double-overtime at home to Liberty as the No. 14 seed in Class 5A.
Its the sixth consecutive postseason appearance for the DHS girls, who finished the regular season 10-4-1. In that span, DHS has advanced past the first round just once, in 2008. Durango bowed out in the second round that year.
Eldridge said hes hoping this is the year Durango finally breaks through again and potentially makes a deep postseason run.
I get a lot of compliments on the way the team plays ... so I would like to think those fundamentals that we kind of try to instill in the girls are going to take us somewhere, Eldridge said.
The head coach said hes satisfied with the seed, albeit curious that despite maintaining the same level of play the Demons had in 5A at the 4A level hasnt caused an improvement in seeding from the days in Class 5A. That said, nothing adjusts a seeding committees perspective like a deep playoff run.
I think until we can do some damage in the playoffs, were not going to get a higher seed than weve been getting, Eldridge said.
Tuesdays winner will meet the winner of No. 3 Palmer Ridge (14-1-0) and No. 30 Thomas Jefferson (7-7-1) on Friday.
