Library, many others providing wireless Internet service gratis
Zak Podmore uses the free Wi-Fi at the Durango Public Library to work on his website while the library was closed. Library Director Andy White says the service is popular, and many residents don’t even bother coming into the building. Tourists parked in their campers are also a frequent sight in the library’s parking lot.
Wi-Fi security

Wi-Fi users at the Durango Public Library are expected to know the basics of Internet safe practices and have antivirus and firewall security. From the library’s wireless access policy:
“As with any public wireless ‘hot spot,’ the library’s wireless connection is not secure. Any information sent or received could potentially be intercepted by another wireless user or untrustworthy third party. Users are advised not to transmit credit card information, passwords or other sensitive personal information while using any wireless access point.”
Because so many sites are not encrypted or protected, users should always be careful about what they do on the Internet, said Matt McClamery, director of information technology at Fort Lewis College. As a precaution, Wi-Fi users should make sure their operating systems are updated and scan their computers for viruses, he added.
