Teens can learn to make wearable art
Artist Vivian Krishnan will teach an introductory wearable art workshop for teens at 10 a.m. May 19.Teens will explore resourcefulness in constructing tasteful and contemporary apparel. They will learn basic skills in reconstructing clothing and surface design as well as finding subject matter to inspire original design. The workshop is meant to encourage students to be part of the TOP event at the Durango Arts Center this fall.
The cost is $15 and includes materials. Animals are theme for photography club
The Durango Photography Club will meet at 7 p.m. May 17 in the Pine Room at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building. Speaker Linda Brothers will discuss and demonstrate Adobe Elements, a less-expensive version of Photoshop.
The monthly theme is wild and domestic animals.Members and guests may take up to three photos for comments and critique. The photo selected as best of the night will receive a club blue ribbon.
Strong to conclude cinema series
The Durango Community Cinema/PBS Independent Lens season will conclude with a screening of Strong at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Durango Discovery Museum.
The film tells the story of Olympic weightlifter Cheryl Haworth. At 5 feet8 inches tall and 300 pounds and on her way to being the strongest woman in the world, Haworth reframes our obsession with weight and obesity into a passion for fitness and health at any size or age.
Also, fitness professionals from the Durango Community Recreation Center and, Fort Lewis College and staff from the Discovery Museum will test attendees endurance and heart rate before and after a turn on the museums energy-cycle or a race to the top of the eTree.
