The end of the road for the Bayfield Wolverines came with their first loss of the season.
The Bayfield High School girls soccer team tasted bitter defeat for the first time Saturday in Denver. The Wolverines lost 1-0 at Colorado Academy in the second round of the CHSAA Class 3A Girls Soccer State Championships.
The Mustangs scored in the fifth minute of the playoff match.
Senior Jackie Murphy scored the only goal of the match, assisted by freshman Marin McCoy.
They scored (early), and we just couldnt recover, Bayfield head coach Jen Zelinski said. We played hard, but it wasnt necessarily our best game.
She said the wide field and the fast artificial turf took a toll on the Wolverines.
The field was much, much wider than ours. I think we got a little tired, Zelinski said.
(Saturday), they were the better team. They were the more skilled team, Zelinski said.
The offensive pressure of the Mustangs limited the Wolverines offensive opportunities, she said.
Colorado Academy outshot the Wolverines 12-7.
BHS had several set-piece opportunities in the second half on direct and indirect kicks, but the Wolverines couldnt convert.
We still had a great season, Zelinski said. I have to credit our seniors. They were great leaders, the younger players acknowledge their leadership. They deserve the credit.
Zelinski said the game offered a special reunion for Sanna Penton, the foreign-exchange student from Sweden. Her parents made the trip from Stockholm to Denver to watch Penton play for the Wolverines.
That was the thing ... after we won last week, her parents got to come watch her play, Zelinski said.
She was disappointed (in the loss). But at halftime ... and in the second half, Sanna was telling the girls, We can win this; we can win this.
The Wolverines, who beat Buena Vista in the first round of the playoffs earlier this week, ended the season 15-1-1 with a school-record 15 victories.
Colorado Academy (11-4-2) advances to face No. 1 overall seed Holy Family (15-2-0) in the state quarterfinals. Holy Family eliminated Middle Park 2-0.
