Thank you for the article 30 local businesses can green up, (Herald, April 25). The Resource Smart Business Program highlighted in this article is an exciting new opportunity for La Plata County businesses. The RSBP is a voluntary certification program that helps local businesses operate more efficiently. Businesses that participate will learn how to assess their energy consumption, worksite wellness and overall sustainability. Businesses that incorporate the recommendations into their business will then become Resource Smart Certified and receive recognition and marketing materials to promote themselves as such.
I would like to clarify, however, that this is not a program specific to the Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency. It was developed and is being provided collaboratively by the Fort Lewis College Environmental Center, Healthy Lifestyle La Plata, La Plata Electric Association, Local First, SWConnect and 4CORE. Part of what makes the RSBP such a unique program is the added value generated by the collaboration of these diverse organizations.
Additionally, the $500,000 grant that was awarded to La Plata County by the EPA is not only for the RSBP, but is also supporting projects by Durango Discovery Museum, Healthy Community Food Systems and Southern Ute Community Action Programs. These projects will engage youth in the science of climate change and energy-efficient design, work with food producers and consumers to make our local food system more sustainable and economically viable, and increase ridership on Road Runner Transit.
Businesses interested in participating in the RSBP can apply online at www.resourcesmartbusiness.com, or for more information, email email@example.com or call 4CORE at 259-1916.
Also, as a consumer, keep an eye out in the future for the Resource Smart Certified logo at local businesses, and support those businesses that have made the choice and taken action to increase the sustainability of their business practices. Your consumer choices are important and can have a large impact in our community.
