English horse show will be held Sunday
Mesa Verde Paint Horse Club will hold an open all English horse show Sunday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
Registration will open at 8:30 a.m., and the show will start at 9:30 a.m.

VFW to hold annual poppy sale
The Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold its annual Buddy Poppy Days May 24, 25 and 26 at local businesses.
Donations will benefit disabled and needy veterans and their families as well as local community childrens programs. VFW members will be distributing poppies and taking donations at Walmart, south City Market, north City Market and Albertsons.
Bayfield library to hold science event
The Lavenia McCoy Public Library in Bayfield will host the Fun with Science Take-Apart Day on Saturday at the library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, and is seeking take-apart items.
Donations of take-apart items, such as toasters, cameras, computers, radios, radio-controlled cars and toys with moving parts will be accepted.
Items can be dropped off at the library checkout desk before the event. The event will be open to children in kindergarten to second grade at 1 p.m. and for children in third grade and up at 2:30 p.m. Advance sign-up is requested.

Learn how to identify weeds on Saturday
Rod Cook, La Plata County weed manger, will teach a free class about weed identification at 10 a.m. Saturday at Durango Nursery, 271 KayCee Lane.
Participants may bring weed samples for identification.

Unify Durango event to be held Saturday
La Gente de Durango will present the Unify Durango from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in Buckley Park.
The event will feature food from local restaurants and a variety of live music, dancers, childrens activities and more.
Grill cook-off to occur Saturday
The Grill Master Cook-Off will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 600 East Second Ave.
Local owners of a Big Green Egg are invited to come and showcase their favorite grilling, smoking, barbecuing or baking recipes on their personal Eggs.
People who are curious about what makes the Big Green Egg different from traditional grills are invited to taste and judge the dishes.

Museum to host water exhibition
The Animas Museum will host an exhibit by Water 2012 through May 26.
The exhibit focuses on the importance of water in Colorado. In addition to the traveling exhibit, historic images from the museum archives tell the story of the many uses of the Animas River. From industry to recreation, the river plays a critical role in the community.
The museum, located at 3065 West Second Ave., is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays.

Quilters to meet at Bayfield library
The Bayfield Quirky Quilters invite all quilters beginner, intermediate or expert to meet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every third Monday beginning May 21 at the Lavenia McCoy Public Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield.
Participants should bring their sewing machine, supplies they may need for their project, a sack lunch and beverages in covered containers.
