Durangos motorists will have to play second fiddle to cyclists throughout Memorial Day weekend, as roads in town and out will close down for the 41st annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic.
On Saturday, U.S. Highway 550 will be closed from Durango Mountain Resort to Silverton from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Iron Horses signature road race.
Traffic in the Animas Valley from Durango to the resort also will face a rerout from 7 to 9 a.m. that will redirect northbound traffic into the southbound lane from the start of County Road 203 to Hermosa. Southbound traffic will be routed along 203 onto 550.
For the downtown criterium Sunday, Main Avenue will be closed all day from 7th Street to 11th Street. Seventh also will be closed from Main to 4th Avenue, and 3rd Avenue will be closed between 7th Street and 8th Street.
For the downtown mountain bike race Sunday, 9th Street will be closed from Narrow Gauge Avenue to 5th Avenue from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fifth will be closed between 9th Street and 10th Street, and then 10th Street will be closed heading east to the nature trail.
Traffic will be detoured to Camino Del Rio.
For the time trial race Monday, County Road 250 will be closed northbound for 14 miles starting one mile north of 32nd Street at the Jehovahs Witnesses church between 7 a.m. and noon. Northbound traffic will be rerouted to U.S. Highway 550, but southbound 250 will remain open to traffic.
The final packet pick-up for this weekends Iron Horse will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Buckley Park in downtown Durango.
The road race, citizens tour and Quarter Horse to Purgatory is Saturday. The criterium and mountain bike races are Sunday.The time trial is Monday.
The omnium for the mens and womens pro cyclists will be determined based on results from the road race, criterium and individual time trial.
