An 11-year-old La Plata County boy was shot in the ear with an arrow Thursday while playing with bows and arrows with a friend.
The accident occurred about 9:40 a.m. in the 10000 block of U.S. Highway 550, south of Farmington Hill in the Juniper Heights subdivision, said Dan Bender, spokesman for the La Plata County Sheriffs Office.
The boys started out playing medieval knights with wooden swords, he said. The game escalated to playing with a toy bow and a real arrow that has a metal tip and is used for target practice, he said.
The boys took turns using a garage can lid as a shield to deflect the arrow as the other shot it, Bender said.
The arrow missed the shield and pierced the boys upper ear, he said.
Medics with Durango Fire & Rescue Authority responded and clipped the arrow on both ends.
It lodged in his ear, and they had to cut the top off to remove it, Bender said. It went into the exterior part of the ear and lodged into that.
The boys mother drove him to Animas Surgical Center, where the remainder of the arrow was removed, Bender said.
The Sheriffs Office investigated and determined the incident to be accidental, Bender said.
