10 years after Missionary Ridge – remembering community’s courage

Firewise of Southwest Colorado will hold a pair of upcoming fundraisers to help the organization continue providing wildfire awareness, education and preparedness efforts for area residents.
The Wildfire Field Day (family activities, fire department competitions, demonstrations, safety video and barbecue) and All Firemen’s Ball will be held from 2 to 10 p.m. June 9 at the Dolores Fire Station. Advance tickets priced at $5 are available at Blondie’s Pub and Grub and Slavens True Value Hardware in Cortez; the Dolores Food Market and Chamber of Commerce in Dolores; and Zuma Natural Foods and Cox Conoco in Mancos. Don’t Get Burnt, Get FireWise – a look at the 2002 Missionary Ridge Fire and a celebration of how far our community has come in preparing for future wildfire events – will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. June 10 at the La Plata County Extension Building. A barbecue lunch will cost $5 (children younger than 16 eat free). Activities will include kids events, fire engines, Smokey Bear, displays, demonstrations and a silent auction.
