After his runner-up finish in 2011, Howard Grotts sat near the front of the field in 2012, too, but he finished this year’s Iron Horse Bicycle Classic in sixth place. “I got a little gap at the top of Molas (in second place),” he said. “But then, they just blew by me. That’s still something I need to work on ... the descents.”

Defending champion and five-time Iron Horse Bicycle Classic champion Ned Overend worked his way up Molas Pass and eventually to Silverton in 10th place, but “I could tell down in the valley I couldn’t do much (Saturday),” said Overend, who still finished 2 minutes faster than he did as a winner in 2011.

Mark Aasmundstad of Flagstaff, Ariz., holds an aerodynamic position as he rockets down Coal Bank Pass on Saturday. Aasmundstad, a member of the early break, finished fourth. “It hurt quite a bit, but it was fun,” Aasmundstad said. “That was the objective ... racing.”
