Triple Crown club thinks I’ll Have Another has a shot
Secretariat owner Penny Chenery, who won the Triple Crown in 1973 when “Big Red” blitzed the field by 31 lengths at the 1½-mile Belmont Stakes in a record time of 2 minutes, 22 seconds, believes in this year’s candidate. “I happen to think I’ll Have Another can do it,” said Chenery, now 90.
Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another arrived at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., in late May. I’ll Have Another comes from California, along with his trainer Doug O’Neill and jockey Mario Gutierrez, who never has ridden at sprawling Belmont Park.

Former Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion Smarty Jones now grazes at Northview Stallion Station in Peach Bottom, Pa. Eight years ago, Smarty Jones was one race away from being horse racing’s first Triple Crown winner since 1978, just missing the feat when he came in second at the Belmont Stakes. Four years later, Big Brown failed at the attempt. This year, I’ll Have Another will give it a go.
