Hummingbird Festival to take place June 23
National Park Service National Resource Manager George San Miguel will be the keynote speaker the Hummingbird Festival at 2 p.m. June 23 at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave.
San Miguel will speak about identifying hummingbirds at a feeder and in the region. Other activities include a childrens showing of the film First Flight at 10 a.m., followed by crafts and other kids activities and a second showing of the film for adults at 1 p.m. A 3 p.m. seminar will address how to attract hummingbirds to your yard.

Ignacio schools to offer free meals
The Ignacio School District will serve free meals to all community children ages 1 to 18 this summer.
A grand opening celebration will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Ignacio High School cafeteria.
Rocco Fuschetto, superintendent, and Ignacio Mayor Ena Millich will be the guest servers.
Animas River Workgroup to host meeting
A community meeting to educate all who are interested in a workgroup process that has been active in the upper Animas Basin will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday in the Pine and Florida rooms of the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
The River Protection Workgroup for the Animas River is the focus of the meeting.
The meeting will inform participants about the River Protection Workgroup model and why public workgroups have been working since 2008; relay a values statement that the workgroup has agreed to; cover an information sheet for the upper Animas River and several segments; and discuss the ideas for protecting values that the workgroup is contemplating. It is anticipated that the workgroup will conclude this fall.

High Country Gardeners to meet Wednesday
The Durango High Country Gardeners will hold a salad bar luncheon, meeting and garden tour of a high altitude garden at noon Wednesday at the home of Heidi Ochsner Mugler.
Members will bring toppings for the lettuce and spinach provided by the hostess. Rolls, iced tea and desert also will be available. Guests are welcome and are not asked to bring any food.
After the meeting, attendees will receive a tour of a perennial garden at 8,300 feet, a vegetable garden, a pond with water lilies and a waterfall.

Cemetery workshops to be offered
The San Juan Mountains Association in partnership with the La Plata County Historical Society will offer two historic cemetery documentation workshops at Animas City Cemetery and the Hermosa Cemetery.
Documentation techniques include inscription recordation, condition assessment, grave mapping and photography.
Each workshop will include an evening orientation session and three days of training at the cemetery.
Workshops are: Session 1 at the Animas City Cemetery on June 20 and June 22-24; Session 2 at the Hermosa Cemetery on Aug. 13 and Aug. 14-16.
Space is limited. Each workshop is $25 per person and includes a workbook.
