The Purgatory Challenge, a three-day adventure-style stage race, will make its debut June 19-21, sponsored by Durango-based Gravity Play Sports.
The three-day race, set in the San Juan Mountains, will include a kayak race Day 1, a 50-mile mountain bike race Day 2, and a mountain trail marathon Day 3.
Participants can race in one, two or all three stages.
The event starts June 19 with the kayak event on the Animas River. It includes a 16-mile paddle up and back down the river.
The mountain bike section features a mix of singletrack, logging roads and scream crossings.
The mountain marathon will utilize mainly singletrack trails at elevations above 10,000 feet.
Staged from Durango Mountain Resort, the race courses include sections on the Hermosa Creek Trail.
Cash and prizes will be awarded to category winners.
Racers who complete all three events within the Purgatory Challenge will vie for the title of Mountain Man/Mountain Woman.
Participants in the Adventure Xstream Adventure Race series are eligible for individual and team points at the Purgatory Challenge.
